2011 Z4 M Sport Gets One Step Closer to Z4 M
When BMW decided to drop its 300-horsepower turbo-six into the new Z4, we wondered where that would leave an M version, especially since they claimed up and down that it wasn't designed to accommodate a V8 engine. The obvious answer was to boost the output of the existing engine, which is exactly what they're doing to create the 2011 Z4 sDrive35is M Sport.
Displacement of the twin-turbo engine remains unchanged at 3.0 liters, but output has been increased from 300 to 335 horsepower and 300 to 332 lb-ft of torque. An overboost function allows for short bursts of extra torque, for a maximum of 369 lb-ft under full load. This increase in power comes from improved intake breathing and increased boost pressure. The exhaust has ben tuned as well, although primarily for audible effect. The new sport exhaust uses unique internal baffles and a different set of mufflers to give the sportier version a more burly rumble.
A single transmission is offered on the Z4 M Sport, the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DCT) with a dual-mass flywheel and special programming to cope with the engine's higher potential. Launch control is part of the programming, allowing the Z4 M Sport to achieve a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds. Surprisingly, the additional power comes without a penalty in fuel consumption as compared to the Z4 sDrive35i.
Naturally, the Z4 M Sport is dressed in M goodies, starting with a 10mm-lower Adaptive M sport suspension. An M aerodynamic package gives the Z4 more aggressive looks; eighteen-inch alloys are standard, though nineteen-inch wheels are optional (and will likely be the preferred choice). Aluminum accents trim out the intake openings, while silver-finished caps highlight the exterior mirrors.
Inside, an anthracite-colored headliner sets a sportier mood. The dash trim features a new finish called Aluminum Carbon. As the name implies, the aluminum trim has been embossed with the signature weave of carbon fiber matting. The effect is similar to the carbon leather treatment offered in numerous M models. All the usual M fittings — steering wheel, door sill plates, foot rest, shift knob and floor mats — are found inside as well. A new Kansas Walnut leather option makes its debut in this model.
The Z4 sDrive35is M Sport will make its debut at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. It will go on sale in the spring of 2010 as a 2011 model. Still no word on whether a Z4 M will return.
