BMW's M Division Sets Second-best Sales Year Ever

The economy may be tanking, but apparently that hasn't stopped those who still have money from ponying up for a new M-car. By August of 2008, the division had sold more cars than in all of 2007. By year's end, more than 24,000 M models had been delivered worldwide. Even in the midst of a nationwide automotive buying freeze, the United States still purchased most of the world's M cars, with 10,663 delivered in 2008.

Much of the division's success can be attributed to the M3, which now includes a coupe, a convertible and a sedan. Total M3 sales for the year was 17,973 units, with the coupe leading the charge with 10,571 of those.

The only year to best 2008 was 2002, when the E46 M3 debuted. Sales of M Cars that year topped 26,000.
