The Formula BMW Racing Centre located in the Spanish town of Valencia proved a very good basis for the talented motor sport youngsters. The centre is the venue for annually offered licence courses and the assessment training in which the best youngsters are short-listed for the Formula BMW ADAC Championship. For the coming season 2004, experts have now chosen eight talents who are going to receive a scholarship package of 50.000 Euro if they decide to participate in the championship.
The new scholarship candidates are: the German drivers Michael Ammermüller (Poching), Marcel Jeleniowski (Bornheim), Dennis Nägele (Lauterstein), and André Sander (Marburg/Lahn); Sébastien Buemi (Aigle) and Adrian Zaugg (Lotzwil) from Switzerland; the Swede Carl Söderblom (Anderstorp), and Chris Van der Drift (Hummello/NL) from New Zealand. The drivers, who are between 15 and 17 years old, have been chosen from 21 participants from nine nations, after they had successfully established themselves against their competitors from three licence courses.
"It wasn't an easy task to nominate the candidates," said BMW works driver Jörg Müller, who, as Chief Instructor at the Formula BMW ADAC Scholarship programme, coordinates the short-listing of the most talented drivers. In the training, all participants first of all learned the theory of handling a Formula car, the proceedings of race events, and important facts on the physics of driving. Under the supervision of highly qualified instructors, the practice programme included driving techniques such as shifting gears, braking, racing line, performing race starts as well as how to behave during safety car periods.
The most talented scholarship applicants stood out by a very good driving and a good perception of technical subjects. "There are some very promising talents among them. They will bring excitement to the championship next year," race expert Müller announced. To encourage the youngsters in their first steps of their motor sport career, the scholarship candidates at BMW and ADAC not only receive a financial support of 50.000 Euro but also special talent development and courses in vehicle physics and technology, sporting law, sports management, public relations, sponsoring, English for motor sport as well as fitness and diet.
The aim of the scholarship programme is to ensure that the youngsters are provided the tools and qualifications they need for a successful career in professional motor sport.
